About City
Stockholm is the capital and largest city of Sweden, as well as the largest urban region in Scandinavia . The municipality has a population of 980,000 people, with 1.6 million in the urban area and 2.4 million in the metropolitan region. Where Lake Mälaren runs into the Baltic Sea, the city spreads across fourteen islands. The Stockholm archipelago, located east of the city and along the shore, is a group of islands. The city was founded in 1252 by Swedish nobleman Birger Jarl, and has been inhabited since the Stone Age, around the 6th millennium BC. In addition, it serves as the county seat of Stockholm County.
Stockholm is Sweden's cultural, media, political, and economic hub. Stockholm alone accounts for almost a third of the country's GDP and is one of Europe's top ten regions in terms of GDP per capita. It is the largest city in Scandinavia and the main centre for business headquarters in the Nordic region, and it is ranked as an alpha-global city. The Stockholm School of Economics, Karolinska Institute, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Stockholm University are just a few of the city's leading universities. At the Stockholm Concert Hall and Stockholm City Hall, it hosts the annual Nobel Prize ceremonies and banquet. The Vasa Museum, one of the city's most cherished institutions, is Scandinavia's most visited non-art museum.
